About the Job
Are you passionate about intellectual property and innovation? We are looking for a Patent Attorney to join our patent function. In this role, you will manage all aspects of a global patent portfolio and provide business-focused IP counselling to our R&D and business units. You will be working closely with our scientists to identify patentable inventions and secure IP protection, ensuring that our cutting-edge innovations are protected.
Your responsibilities will include:
Managing all aspects of a global patent portfolio including drafting, filing, and prosecution of patent applications as well as conducting prior art searches and novelty assessments
Performing freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses
Provide patent validity opinion and infringement advice
Handling opposition/appeal at the European Patent Office
Collaborating with key business partners and providing business-oriented IP counselling
Sharing knowledge and insights to support the company's growth and success

About You
You have a degree in material science, physics or mechanical or electrical engineering. Further, you match most of the following:
Experience working as an in-house patent attorney or in a patent law
Fully qualified European Patent Attorney
Strong expertise in patent drafting, prosecution, and post-grant proceedings
Experience in due diligence and contract negotiation
Experience in FTO analysis and infringement analysis
Experience in opposition and/or appeal at the European Patent Office
Experience in patent monitoring
Experience in M&A

The location for this position is in Stockholm, Sandviken or Hallstahammar. Depending on where you will be located domestic travel occurs. Also, occasionally international travel may occur.

Patents and other technology-related Intellectual Property (IP) rights are vital and high-priority elements of SMS business operations. SMS Patent is part of SMS Legal and is responsible for the coordination and integration of Business Area Patent operations, including protecting and enforcing IP rights. We are a diverse and highly skilled team located in Sandviken, Fagersta, Stockholm, Sweden, and Tübingen, Germany, and we work in close collaboration with the rest of the patent organization within Sandvik.
About your job
In this position, you work in a diverse and global team with patent managers, attorneys, engineers and other administrators, gaining insights into all aspects of the global IP administrative work. You ensure that administrative services within the field are provided in an accurate and timely manner, in accordance with business needs. You handle administration correspondence and documentation within Sandvik patent organization, towards R&D, other units in our organization, as well as externally towards patent agents and patent authorities in different countries. You also work with in-house patenting operations in Europe, USA, and India.
The job includes a broad range of paralegal and patent administration related tasks where you identify, handle and resolve various formality issues and matters, as well as other IP and legal related matters that may need attention. The tasks of your job are present throughout the whole patenting process, from invention disclosures, patent applications and granted patents world-wide. The role is focused on EP Administration work and hence requires strong knowledge and experience of working with EP filings and prosecution. You work independently and in collaboration with other patent professionals in our organization, as well as with external partners.
Your responsibilities include ensuring that each step in the patent process is registered and maintained in IP databases – reviewing, monitoring and attending deadlines on IP dockets, and maintaining high availability and accuracy of patent portfolio data. You act as the intermediary between external law firms and in-house patent attorneys and engineers, file patent applications and responses at patent offices and manage formal documents. You actively suggest and implement new or improved ways of working for the team.
The location for this position is preferably Sandviken, however, Västberga in Stockholm could also be an option. We offer you a hybrid work solution where you can spend some of your days working from home.
About you
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in accuracy and attention to details combined with paralegal or equivalent experience from IP or law. You have a strong understanding of patent administration and a background from working in an IP law firm, corporate IP department or national patent authority. Experience from filing and prosecution, communication, and payments in regard of EPO, WIPO, and other IP authorities, as well as skills in Office 365 applications and communication tools is needed. It is important that you are skilled and experienced in independently handling EP administration work, specifically EP filing and prosecution. We see it as a plus if your knowledge is backed by an education within IP paralegal space, or a degree in Law. We operate in an international environment which calls for excellent communication skills in English.

A focus of this position, is that you have a genuine interest of accuracy and correctness of details. This follows with paralegal or equivalent experience from IP or law. Your focus may also be found if you are experienced in handling sensitive and confidential information, e.g. hospital patient journals, accountant files or other authority documents with high demand on accuracy and confidentiality.
Beneficial is experience from an IP law firm, corporate IP department or national patent authority; also experience of working with filing, communication, and payments in regard of EPO, WIPO, or other IP authorities. It’s beneficial if you have an education within IP paralegal, or a degree in Law or Finance. Skills in Office 365, especially Word and Excel, is needed. Experience from working with patent management programs is a plus. We operate in an international environment, thus it´s expected you communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
